Overview
Practice Management is responsible for providing non-clinical resources to the membership business aspects of hospital medicine and the management of hospital medicine groups. SHM members have access to a variety of resources, many for free or at a reduced cost. These include the State of Hospital Medicine Report, the Practice Management Webinar Series, and resources to address well-being and burnout, clinical documentation, program administration, and more.
State of Hospital Medicine Report 2023
The State of Hospital Medicine (SoHM) Report defines industry standards and is the most comprehensive resource on hospital medicine group configuration and operation. The report combines data collected in the State of Hospital Medicine Survey and data from the Medical Group Management Association’s Physician Compensation and Production Survey. The 2023 SoHM Report will also include data from SHM’s inaugural Workforce Experience Survey, which collected individual hospital data on patient census, backup systems, and well-being.

Stop the Stigma: An Action Toolkit to Remove Mental Health History Reporting
Stigma and concerns relating to the loss of medical license or other practice privileges can create a barrier to seeking mental health treatment. This toolkit provides easy to follow steps and scripts to advocate for change where these barriers exist.

The leadership of a hospitalist group plays a critical role in the culture, engagement, and overall success of the group. Current Issues
DEA Licensure Requirement
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) have released new licensure requirements related to the new Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act. Starting June 27, 2023, all health care practitioners who apply newly for or seek to renew their DEA registration will be required to complete 8 hours of relevant accredited education related to the prevention, recognition, and care of people with substance use disorders.
