Dr. Mookherjee Focuses on Optimizing Clinical Teaching Through Mentorship, Research, and Directing Faculty Development
The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) recently announced the recipients of its 2023 Awards of Excellence, honoring hospitalists who are working towards a bright future in hospital medicine, through innovation, education, and advocacy. Dr. Somnath Mookherjee is this year’s recipient in the “Excellence in Teaching” category.“Hospital medicine continues to grow at a rapid pace, and we need leaders and innovators in the field to ensure that its future remains bright for years to come,” explains Eric E. Howell, MD, MHM, Chief Executive Officer of the Society of Hospital Medicine. “This year’s Awards of Excellence recipients are among those who have risen to the challenge and contributed not only to the advancement of hospital medicine, but to the overall state of healthcare nationwide.”
Dr. Mookherjee is Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington. His clinical practice is in perioperative medicine and internal medicine consultation, while his scholarly work focuses on optimizing clinical teaching.
In his role at the University of Washington School of Medicine, Dr. Mookherjee mentors students and teaches fundamental physicianship skills. As Associate Director for Faculty Development in Clinical Teaching for the UW Center for Learning and Innovation in Medicine Education, Dr. Mookherjee directs the UW Clinical Teaching Certificate Program. He also directs the Faculty Development Program and the Academic Hospitalist Fellowship for the UW Division of General Internal Medicine. In recent years, he has published research on peer feedback of teaching, physical examination education, and education in quality improvement and patient safety.
Dr. Mookherjee has been active in SHM since completing the UCSF Fellowship in Academic Hospital Medicine in 2008. He is currently the deputy editor for the Clinical Care Conundrum series for the Journal of Hospital Medicine.
