Dr. Scheurer Recognized for Leadership and Enduring Commitment to Society and Field of Hospital Medicine

The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) recently named four new Masters in Hospital Medicine (MHM) to honor those who have demonstrated a longstanding commitment to the principles of leadership, teamwork, and quality improvement within the specialty of hospital medicine. Danielle B. Scheurer, MD, MSCR, MHM, has been elected a Master in Hospital Medicine in recognition of her leadership and commitment to SHM and the field of hospital medicine.

“This year’s Masters in Hospital Medicine embody what it means to be a leader in the field and reflect the multitude of ways in which hospitalists positively impact patient care,” says Eric E. Howell, MD, MHM, Chief Executive Officer of the Society of Hospital Medicine. “Their dedication and innovation have helped to trailblaze a path for thousands of other hospitalists, guiding and empowering them to achieve the very best for their hospitals, their patients, and their communities.”

Dr. Scheurer completed her joint internal medicine-pediatrics residency at Duke University, and her Master of Science in Clinical Research from the Medical University of South Carolina, where she currently serves as Chief Quality Officer and continues to practice as a hospitalist.

Dr. Scheurer’s commitment to SHM has been unwavering, including during her time on the Board of Directors from 2014 to 2022. Her leadership as President during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic was instrumental in guiding SHM’s response to canceling in-person events and pivoting SHM towards the new virtual formats necessary to reach our membership.

As President, Dr. Scheurer also appointed the SHM DEI Task Force, which ultimately led to SHM forming a full-fledged DEI Committee. Dr. Scheurer also led the Journal of Hospital Medicine Editor-in-Chief Search Committee in 2018 and the SHM CEO Search Committee in 2020.

Outside of her presidency, Dr. Scheurer served as the physician editor of The Hospitalist for nine years and presented at multiple SHM annual conferences. She was also Chair of the Communications Strategy Committee and an active member of the Education and Research Committees.

The newest Masters in Hospital Medicine were recognized at SHM’s annual conference, SHM Converge, held from March 26-29, 2023, in Austin, TX. For more information on SHM’s Master in Hospital Medicine designation and to view all previous recipients, visit hospitalmedicine.org/fellows.
