Dr. Archna Eniasivam Committed to Transforming Systems and Embedding Equity in the Clinical Space

The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) recently announced the recipients of its 2023 Awards of Excellence, honoring hospitalists who are advancing hospital medicine through innovation, education, and advocacy.

“Hospital medicine continues to grow at a rapid pace, and we need leaders and innovators in the field to ensure that its future remains bright for years to come,” explains Eric E. Howell, MD, MHM, Chief Executive Officer of the Society of Hospital Medicine. “This year’s Awards of Excellence recipients are among those who have risen to the challenge and contributed not only to the advancement of hospital medicine, but to the overall state of healthcare nationwide.”

Dr. Archna Eniasivam is this year’s recipient in the “Excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Leadership” category. She is committed to transforming systems and structures along with the people that uphold them. As a DEIB Physician Lead, she works on culture change in the clinical space including developing processes for policies to be created and reviewed with an anti-racism and healing-centered lens. As Director of Social Medicine, she works to embed health equity into the pillars of quality improvement, faculty/staff development, research, and patient experience.

Her current focus is on building relationships with community organizations to better incorporate patients and community in identifying and addressing inequities within the hospital. In addition to mentoring faculty and learners, she also developed curriculum as a co-director for six weeks of the first year of medical school focused on health systems science and social justice.

Dr. Eniasivam is Associate Professor in the Departments of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco where she also serves as Director of Social Medicine for the Division of Hospital Medicine and a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Physician Lead for UCSF Health. She co-leads her division’s Anti-Racism Task Force and DEI Summer Internship for first year medical students. She co-led the Hospital Medicine Reengineering Network (HOMERuN) Anti-Racism and Health Equity work group (2020-2022), benchmarking health equity initiatives across academic hospital medicine programs.

Awards of Excellence winners were recognized at SHM’s annual conference, SHM Converge, held from March 26-29, 2023, in Austin, TX. For more information on SHM’s Awards of Excellence, visit hospitalmedicine.org/awards.
