Medical Education Assistance Scholarship Fosters Growth of Vibrant and Diverse Hospital Medicine Workforce
Today, the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) announces that Sound Physicians has agreed to serve as Visionary Sponsor of its Hospital Medicine Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Scholarship Fund in the amount of $25,000. Sound Physicians’ sponsorship will assist in providing a medical student financial support for their medical school education, thereby fostering the growth of a vibrant, diverse hospital medicine workforce.
“As a medical group, Sound is committed to eliminating healthcare disparities, and one of the key ways we can advance collective efforts towards this goal is to promote the diversification of our clinical workforce,” explains Gregory R. Johnson, MD, SFHM, FAAFP, FACP, CEO of Sound Hospital Medicine and Chief Diversity Officer. “Scholarships are a tangible way we can demonstrate our commitment to the specialty of hospital medicine and how we can continue to contribute to the communities we serve. We are excited to partner with SHM in this endeavor.”
SHM developed the scholarship fund as part of its commitment to investing in a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture, recognizing a critical opportunity to support the growth of a pipeline of physicians who will willingly support underserved communities.
“We are proud to invest in the future of our field through this scholarship and are grateful for Sound Physicians’ partnership,” notes Eric E. Howell, MD, MHM, SHM CEO. "Together, we can help provide opportunities to medical students to equip them with the tools they need to reduce disparities and improve outcomes for hospitalized patients in communities across the country.”
Dr. Howell will present the Hospital Medicine Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Scholarship Fund at SHM’s annual conference, SHM Converge, in San Diego, California, in April of this year.
