Successful Nominations Prove Growing Impact of Hospital Medicine Research
Philadelphia, PA (February 22, 2017) – Two members of the editorial board for the Journal of Hospital Medicine, the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM)’s peer-reviewed journal, have been elected to join the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI)’s new member class of 2017. This honor is reserved for physicians who have “accomplished meritorious, original, creative and independent investigations in the clinical or allied sciences of medicine and enjoys an unimpeachable moral standing in the medical profession,” according to the ASCI bylaws.
With the nominations of Andrew Auerbach, MD, MPH, SFHM, and Vineet Arora, MD, MPP, FHM, there are now four ASCI members that identify as hospitalists. David Meltzer, MD, PhD, FACP, MHM was elected in 2008, and Sanjay Saint, MD, MPH, FHM in 2009
“As one of four hospitalists inducted into ASCI, having our new field represented is a great honor for our emerging specialty. Membership in ASCI is recognition of an individual’s research, innovation, impact and importance,” notes Dr. Auerbach. “Vinny and I are particularly unique recipients in that clinical research – and education-focused research – are somewhat harder to define in these ways, so successful nomination represents the idea that a high bar has been met and exceeded.”
Dr. Auerbach is the Professor of Medicine in Residence and Director of Research Division of Hospital Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. He has been the Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Hospital Medicine since 2012. Dr. Arora works with Dr. Auerbach as Deputy Editor; she is an Associate Professor of Medicine, Assistant Dean for Scholarship and Discovery and Director of GME Clinical Learning Environment Innovation at the University of Chicago.
“As someone who has focused my research on improving training and care in hospitals, I am honored to be part of representing hospital medicine in ASCI,” says Dr. Arora on her recent nomination. “Getting inducted with Andy is even more exciting, given our work together at the Journal of Hospital Medicine, and it highlights that hospital medicine research is a science that has impact.
