Society Among 20 Medium Companies Recognized for Culture, Compensation, Benefits, and Trust in Senior Leadership Based on Employee Feedback

This week, the Philadelphia Business Journal announced its 2021 Greater Philadelphia Best Places to Work and named the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) as one of 20 recipients in the medium company category, comprised of organizations with 50-99 employees.

“SHM prides itself for keeping employee engagement, support, and wellbeing at the core of its organizational culture,” explains Eric E. Howell, MD, MHM, SHM Chief Executive Officer. “We are honored to be included in this elite group of organizations across the Philadelphia region.”

Developed in 2004, the annual Best Places to Work survey issued from Quantum Workplace is designed to recognize companies where employees feel valued and engaged, considering the following factors:

  • Communication and Resources
  • Manager Effectiveness
  • Individual Needs
  • Personal Engagement
  • Team Dynamics
  • Trust in Leadership

During a particularly challenging year, SHM focused on further integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion into its employee programming while transitioning staff to a remote work environment to accommodate their needs during the pandemic.

SHM engaged the IVY Planning Group to host multiple virtual forums to emphasize the importance of open, honest conversations about challenging topics, including the impact of the pandemic and bias. Staff had the opportunity to share personal stories in a safe environment without judgment of how racism and injustice have impacted them -- both inside and outside of the workplace. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Juneteenth are now company holidays, and employees are encouraged to use these days for service and reflection.

To further unite the SHM team while working from home, the Human Resources Department and the Employee Relations Committee organized a series of virtual events. SHM’s traditional “Holiday Week,” comprised of contests and social activities, was transformed into a virtual environment, including trivia happy hours and mask decorating contests via Zoom.

“Our staff is the heart and soul of our organization, and without them, this honor would not be possible,” notes Joi Seabrooks, PHR, SHM Director of Human Resources. “We are grateful they feel so proud to call SHM their professional home.”
