SHM compiles an ongoing list of recommended, hospital medicine-specific programs that we find to be of value to our members. The CME opportunities listed below are sponsored by other organizations.

UCSF Hospital Medicine: Evidence to Practice

June 21-23, 2023 | The Royal Hawaiian, Honolulu, HI

This course covers the clinical issues most relevant to hospitalists and other clinicians who care for inpatients. Taught by UCSF’s top teachers and selected guest faculty, the course – in its inaugural year – highlights recent advances and current controversies. To promote active learning, the course will use a mobile audience response system. In addition, there will be dedicated review and consolidation sessions where key learning points will be reviewed.

The course includes broad content in infectious diseases (including updates in COVID), critical care, perioperative care, consult medicine, nephrology, and much more!

This course is presented by the UCSF Division of Hospital Medicine and is sponsored by the Office of Continuing Medical Education, University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine.

Pediatric Sedation and Pediatric Dental Sedation Conference

September 9-12, 2023 | New York, NY

This course is intended to improve learner competence and performance by offering a comprehensive review of sedation, from the basics to evolving and state-of-the art practice (i.e. knowledge). Being prepared for rare and unanticipated emergencies as well as for the more common adverse events, the learner will be equipped to improve patient outcomes. The aim of this conference is to increase the participant’s breadth of knowledge of pediatric sedation and elaborate on ways to improve and track patient outcomes. Recognized leaders from multi-specialties will offer national and international perspectives.

 

The Critical Airway Course: Critical Care

September 22 - 24, 2023 | Manchester Grand Hyatt, San Diego, CA

The Difficult Airway Course: Critical Care focuses exclusively on the airway challenges posed by critically ill inpatients. Led by Dr. Jarrod Mosier, this advanced course features a dynamic and interactive learning environment emphasizing airway assessment and decision-making. Our faculty of airway experts leads didactic instruction and hands-on practice in crucial airway techniques (including video laryngoscopy, awake intubation, flexible bronchoscopy, and surgical cricothyrotomy) to build the capacity to manage all airway situations - and to do so with great confidence.

SCP Health designates this live activity for a maximum of 20.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of SCP Health and Airway Management Education Center (AMEC). Physiology on the Fly

This course offered by MDI Biological Laboratory is directed towards Educators in Hospital Medicine, General Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and any other physicians who are interested in incorporating physiology based teaching into clinical practice. The purpose of this course is to equip clinician educators with the confidence and ability to integrate physiology and mechanistic thinking into their daily clinical teaching and medical decision making.

 

Update in Hospital Medicine Conference

October 13 - 15, 2023 | San Antonio, TX

Hosted by UT Health San Antonio this conference is designed to update providers caring for hospitalized adult patients on the most current diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for inpatient care. The course will also include relevant content related to diversity, equity and inclusion, physician wellness, and pain management.

Objectives: Apply modern therapeutic approaches to common inpatient disorders, apply culturally competent care to patients of diverse backgrounds, develop a holistic pain treatment plan considering a patient's unique needs, identify factors leading to burnout among frontline staff and ways to mitigate this.

 

18th Annual Mayo Clinic Hospital Medicine: Managing Complex Patients

November 1 - 4, 2023 | Mayo Clinic School of Continuous Professional Development

Hospital medicine requires a diverse skill set. Hospital-based healthcare providers must be able to diagnose and manage a wide variety of clinical conditions, coordinate transitions of care, provide perioperative management to surgical patients, and contribute to quality improvement and hospital administration. This program is specifically designed to ensure participants augment their knowledge and skills to meet these challenges in the management of complex hospital care, enhance healthcare delivery and lead in the hospital environment.

Objectives: Upon completion of this activity, participants should have up-to-date new knowledge in important hospital medicine topics including being able to:

  • Recognize clinical features of urgent and emergent oncologic conditions
  • Develop an approach to valvular disease in hospitalized patients
  • Select an appropriate initial treatment for COPD exacerbation in the hospital
  • Identify consequences associated with workplace violence in healthcare
  • Employ a rational approach to the use of telemetry in the hospital
  • Choose an evidence-based approach to hyperglycemia in hospitalized diabetic patients
