Overview

About the Report

The State of Hospital Medicine (SoHM) Report defines industry standards and is the most comprehensive resource on hospital medicine group configuration and operation. Released biennially, it includes the most recent data on practice demographics, staffing levels, turnover, staff growth, compensation models and financial support for solid evidence-based management decisions from across the country. It combines data collected in the State of Hospital Medicine Survey and data from the Medical Group Management Association’s Physician Compensation and Production Survey.

Whether you are a practice administrator, physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, academic, HMG leader, hospitalist management company or a hospital/medical group executive, this Report contains regional and national trends in hospital medicine to help make decisions and improve groups.

The 2020 State of Hospital Medicine Report also includes access to the COVID-19 Addendum, an additional dataset that explores how hospital medicine groups responded and adapted to the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 Addendum is exclusively available to purchasers of the Report.

The Report and Addendum package is available for purchase in digital, print, or a bundle of both.

About the Survey

The Report is sourced from data collected from individuals and groups via a Survey SHM distributes nationwide to HMGs every other year. Participation from groups across the nation is crucial to the Report’s relevance and success, and as such SHM continually seeks to improve the diversity and scope of participants with each iteration.

SHM’s Practice Analysis Committee and staff work together to review and refine the survey questions and then to analyze survey results for the State of Hospital Medicine Report.

The Value of Data

How data can impact you.

The Report is designed to provide hospitalists a snapshot of national trends and standards within the field. We intend for the data to serve as a benchmark by which you can continuously measure and compare the performance of your practice both internally and externally to other HMGs across the country.

What's New?

The topics included in the 2020 SoHM Report are more wide-ranging than ever before. In addition to traditional questions regarding the scope of services, staffing and scheduling models, leadership configuration, and financial support, this year’s Report includes brand-new questions specifically dedicated to pediatric hospital medicine groups, expanded information on NP/PA roles, and data on diversity in HM physician leadership.

COVID-19 Addendum

All purchasers of the 2020 SoHM Report have exclusive access to a supplement — Innovation, Flexibility, and Value: Hospital Medicine Groups Responding to the COVID-19 Pandemic, that looks at the changes instituted by HMGs during the COVID-19 pandemic across five major dimensions: Staffing and Scheduling, Financial, Scope of Practice, Operations and Telehealth. Hospitalists' experience with COVID-19 is constantly evolving and, though this data is a snapshot of a mid-2020 moment in time, it clearly shows how change is on-going and how hospitalists are leading the way.

Due to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the next version of the State of Hospital Medicine Report is delayed until 2023.

Take a sneak peek into what the Addendum has to offer by downloading the complimentary Executive Summary

Key findings from 2020 SoHM Report & COVID-19 Addendum:

70% of HMGs created dedicated COVID and non-COVID teams in 2020

Two notable changes address workflow and management of patients. Hospitalists across the country instituted dedicated COVID and non-COVID teams and adjusted patient allocation and provider workflows to streamline care for COVID-19 patients.

Median of 11% of hospitalists jobs unfilled.

Maintaining a full staffing complement continued to be a challenge for many HMGs nationwide. Half of HMGs serving children only, half of HMGs serving both adults and children and close to three-quarters of HMGs serving adults only reported having unfilled positions in their HMGs during at least a portion of the year.

Increase in Pediatric HMG participation

2020 Survey participation showed a nearly threefold increase from 2018 in the number of HMGs that serve pediatric patients only (pediatric HMGs), although adult HMGs serving adult patients continue to comprise the majority of respondents.
